21) Days 3-5

SWOH reached Mount Laguna, the first resupply station along the PCT. After purchasing a few necessary items and having a nice meal, they hiked for a couple more hours till dark. A fierce wind blew in – just in time to turn pitching their new Exped tent into a real challenge. While Sabine tried to get some shut-eye, Oli kept watch, journaling the last days (and taking advantage of net reception). Clearly, a few things need optimizing. Altho the daily routine is becoming easier physically – they're now averaging 20 km daily – SWOH decided to purchase an even lighter tent. They’ve ordered a new Z-Packs Duplex Ultralight tent online (a mere $599 plus $5 postage), weighing a mere 539 grams compared to the 2.1 kg Exped tent, which will be delivered to the Warner Springs post office at kilometer 110. The "old" Exped will be mailed to a friend in New York, to be picked up en route at the end of their trip.

Alas, no reward for their nocturnal labors: while the tent seems to have withstood the gales, neither got any shut-eye. The photo shows Oli holding on tight to the inside of the tent. Presumably all night long.
